What is the menopause and why do I need to learn more?

Good question!

Menopause has the potential to impact significantly on businesses. Whilst menopause is a natural process, many women can struggle during this transition with a variety of symptoms including hot flushes, difficulty sleeping, anxiety and problems with concentration and memory.

Research suggests that 1 in 10 women consider leaving their job as a consequence of their symptoms, as well as a lack of support from their workplace.

When you consider that 23% of the female working population are 45-55 years old, raising awareness of menopause amongst the entire workforce and offering female employees support with their menopausal transition, should form part of all company workplace policies and help to ensure experienced, skilled, talented, hard-working women remain in the labour market.

Your expert Menopause Speaker

My name is Dr Susanna Unsworth, and I started Cambridge Women’s Health to provide a specialist, evidence-based clinic to support women experiencing perimenopause and menopause.

To give some background on myself, I completed my medical training at Cambridge University and subsequently worked in hospitals throughout the eastern region, before qualifying in general practice. During this time, I enhanced my expertise in women’s health, achieving diplomas in community gynaecology, reproductive health and menopause care, gaining Menopause Specialist registration with the British Menopause Society. My NHS work now focuses solely on women’s health, in my roles as a breast specialist at Cambridge Breast Unit and as a community gynaecology GP in Essex.

Four years ago, I set up a local private clinic, Cambridge Women’s Health, to improve access to expert menopause care. In recent years, there has been a great shift in the conversation around menopause, and many women are now actively looking for ways to optimise their health during this time. As a result, the clinic has evolved and now provides access to online consultations and treatment to women all across the UK, delivered by myself, along with my expert colleague, Dr Katherine Mellanby.
